UDOT Avalanche Control Gun Mount Buildings

Architect: UDOT

The project is a two story concrete storage building and gun emplacement, located at 10,800 feet above sea level and perched on a cliff overlooking the Town of Alta. The building is designed to house a military howitzer used for avalanche control in the area. Rock-filled gabion baskets surround the lower level where munitions are stored. Access to the site is restricted, and materials were delivered up a single narrow dirt road or by helicopter. Inside the building ENTELEN constructed a swivel-type gun mount, into which the howitzer was set and fixed. Large openings on the north and west sides permit a wide range of firing options toward the mountain tops across the road below.
